WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — In advance of national and state recognitions, Lewis County Commission took time at their regular meeting Tuesday to acknowledge a trio of groups with a local presence.
Commissioners signed proclamations supporting National Police Week, CEOS Week, Provider Appreciation Day and Community Action Month. The latter two were recognized with a representative of MountainHeart Community Services.
According to the National Police Week proclamation, National Peace Officers Memorial Day used to be recognized May 15 until Congress established National Police Week for May 12-18.
“The Lewis County Commission honors the valor, service and dedication of all our police officers and salutes the service of each and every one,” Commission President Bobby Stewart read.
Police from the West Virginia State Police, Lewis County Sheriff’s Department and Weston Police Department were among those who attended.
A dozen volunteers from Lewis County Community Education Outreach Service groups also attended Tuesday’s meeting in advance of CEOS Week May 19-25.
Members said they planted flowers at WVU Jackson’s Mill and plan to recognize the week through signs downtown.
Lewis County CEOS members recorded 49,500 hours of volunteering September 2022 through August 2022, the most of any county submitting volunteer hours.
Lewis County CEOS began 2024 with nearly 150 members and five clubs. Another club was being formed in the county seat of Weston as well, meeting monthly at the Lewis County Senior Center.
A representative from MountainHeart Community Services, based in Elkins, also joined commissioners to recognize Provider Appreciation Day this May 10 and Community Action Month throughout May.
The May 15 commission meeting has been canceled, so commissioners are next set to meet at 10 a.m. May 21 in the second-floor meeting room of the Lewis County Courthouse. The courthouse is located at 110 Center Ave. in Weston.
